Can I Skim Coat Over Concrete?

Are you unsatisfied with the look of your concrete? Is your concrete riddled with holes and cracks? One of the quickest, easiest, and most cost-effective ways to resurface your concrete slab is with a “skim coat.”

Skim coats are typically applied as a thin layer of cementitious material that transforms your slab to its proper glory.  These coats are also referred to as micro-toppings or overlayment, and are a common material when repairing the most beat-up floors.

Trust the Professionals

Our team has the knowledge and experience to turn your project around in a quick, and efficient manner. With many years in this industry, we know the ins and outs of concrete protection and resurfacing. Almost all concrete flooring renovation is based on the quality of preparation.

Our state-of-the-art equipment is built for the toughest projects and can handle anything thrown at them. Also, our concrete preparation is very safe and controlled thanks to our large HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter vacuums, keeping dust out of the air and your environment.

Not all slabs are perfect. They might be full of ugly spots, unlevel in certain areas, or just simply failing structurally. These skim coats will not only bring the floor to a desired level of flatness but will also provide great structural properties. The material can oftentimes be even stronger than your concrete itself, with higher compressive forces.

Also, because the material is cementitious (as is concrete), the new layer on your substrate will adhere to the existing concrete seamlessly. However because the new topping is reinforced with different mixtures of cement and denser, it will not crack and spall as easily as your previous top layer.

Just the Beginning

Many customers utilize these skim coats as the start of a more involved makeover. Once your concrete is free of imperfections, it can be a great blank canvas for a multitude of options. Many people choose to dye or stain their new layer of floor to provide the desired color. These dyes and stains come in a wide variety of colors and are very customizable as well with the use of stencils.

Or if you were imagining a polymer/resinous flooring option, this is a great start to the process. From metallic to flake, take a  look into our other service pages that showcase our resinous flooring options to see if one is right for your project.  Other times these toppings may just be for a new carpet or tile installation that requires a perfect, level floor. Regardless of your next steps, a skim coat can only help the process.

These materials are typically self-leveling and can be very easily installed. The fine powder is mixed with water and poured on the floor, where it can then be troweled by hand, or via a squeegee, while also being spike-rolled to provide a uniform, consistent finish. Typically the material can be applied as thin as just a few miles, to over an inch thick. Creating a very versatile option when resurfacing your floor. Also when properly prepared these materials can even go over quarry tile or even certain wood subfloors. These applications can be turned around in just one day, allowing for your floor to return to its original purpose as soon as possible.

As with all of our services, our skim coats are backed by our 15-year warranty protection program. This is a testament to the quality and performance of our services, which you will notice as soon as we are on the job.
